People ask what motivated me to write “Crying Mountain.”

I have been carrying this book in my heart since I was a child.  It is a part of who I am.  I am deeply honored by the positive impact and the inspiration that my writing has created in people’s lives.   Written words and the stories they tell can be very powerful--especially when they affect the soul in a positive way.   If I can uplift one person’s spirit by telling my stories, then I have achieved one of my greatest personal goals.

This book is about believing in oneself, about love and about forgiveness.  It’s about appreciating being alive.   I feel that as long as you are breathing and alive on this planet you have no choice but to live your life--so why not live it the best way you can under any and all circumstances.

Tilou, the protagonist of Crying Mountain, shows us how to deal with our challenges in a more effective way.  She also teaches us how to live our best lives and how to love ourselves in spite of the daily difficulties that we encounter.  Through her, we learn that each of us has our own special set of gifts and enough personal apparatus to rise against our overwhelming odds.  If we search for what is best, and most capable, about ourselves, we shall find it. Like Ton Pifo, who rescued Tilou after the hurricane, would say, pa gin pwoblem: there is no fret.

Last Saturday Night Party

Lili, my husband and I, and other friends of Daisy and Aaron were in their house celebrating Aaron's birthday. The atmosphere was incredible in our drum circle around the fire, a canopy of stars, good food, wine and dance. We decided to read some passages of "Crying Mountain". Lili's poems in the book caught the hearts of everybody in her celebration of freedom in "I can fly". It gives inspiration and hope to people to overcome their fears and get ready to enjoy life in the present moment. I was so proud of Lili when she put in her book universal feelings that sometimes we forget to appreciate. Also, the other poem "America" (shown bellow) melt the hearts of all foreigners like us, who came to this country to be part of a mixed and democratic society. The poem made us think about the values of the "Founder Fathers" and all the people who contribute to build this nation based in those values.

Lili, your book must be read for everyone who believe in a better world.

America

I will go to America someday
I will touch its soil with my hand
For I know I will find a way
As I marvel at this beautiful land

I will glorify thy beauty
As I bow before thee
With grace and modesty
While heaven looks upon me

I will worship thy name
From the mountains to the sea
Boundless, absolute and sublime
Is your love for me

You are the music of humanity
No other place I'd rather be
Heaven smiles at your majesty
Because of You I am free

I start reading your book and it is an amazing story. I like the part when Tilou saved three pink rat that created a big family, she suggested to save trees, and also learned that Lili is actually a strong and a beautiful plant. I also experienced verious emotions, scary and sadness at the beginning of chapers, then courage, joy and happiness. It is a great story, a wonderful book!!!!!

Yes, I would like to bring a book for your autograph.

I recently purchased this book and got into it immediately. This is a very in-depth story of a child's experience amongst mass destruction from a hurricane, while also a close look into the lives and people of Haiti. Most readers should find the novel intriguing with its colorful descriptions of the location and the various events. Lili Dauphin is quite talented.

I read the excerpt of the book and decided to order it right away from Barnes and Noble. A friend of mine told me that it was an interesting book.

This piece of exceptional literary work defines the pervasive strength of the human will and spirit. It is a story of unparalleled determination within an eight year-old in spite of insurmountable odds and obstacles that lends itself well to a cultual documentary genre even though the writing and style are thoroughly filled with humor, wit and ageless natural wisdom. What an entertaining, grasping and fully uplifting spiritual and heartwarming read this work provides for what will surely be the most entranced of readers!
The addition of the CD songs and the sometimes French/Creole poetry/lyrics permuted within the book further serve to expand the cultural indulgence provided by Crying Mountain. Just listen to the serene sounds of her music on this blog and one can be able to at least start to appreciate Dauphin's inherent talents in addition to her inately mature human spirit and soul... all of from which we as a race should and could learn. The World would be a better place if more people were like Tilou (or Lili, for that matter)! Let us all learn from her and strive to emulate her wisdom through her experience.

I am Haitian. I am only in the middle of reading the book, but felt that I had a few words to say. The book is telling it exactly the way it is in Haiti, no exaggerations here. For example, the market scene was described perfectly. I want my own modernized daughter to read the page about how the younger generation respected their elders.

I have just finished the book, I have four daughters and I loved the book and I wish everyone could read it. Rush and click on BOOKS and purchase your own copy...I felt like I was watching the best movie while I was readin this book...the characters were so vivid and memorable...and the best part was I got to see into a new culture and life in another part of the world...I think this is how we become more tolerant and spread peace in the world.

I just finished the book. I love the story, how it is told through the eyes of a beautiful 8 year old girl that is so innocent, loving and caring and always happy and making people smile. It made me laugh, it made me cry. I loved how she becomes a celebrity in the village of Tiville through her writing. I like Moun the dog, he's a great hero and I loved how he gets rewarded. I loved Claire for being so sweet. I was filled with every emotion while reading this story.

I loved this book. The courage and strength demonstrated by the young 8 year old child is quite remarkable. If you think you have problems or if you are feeling down, just remember that you have it a lot better than this poor innocent child. You won't hear too many stories of survival like this.

True story about a very young girl growing up in Haiti. You will cry and laugh with her, and cherish her indomitable spirit. A born story-teller who will have you anxiously awaiting her next book.
